A New Harbor to Call Home: Moving to Lloyd Harbor, New York
Lloyd Harbor, New York, is an unincorporated village and hamlet in the Town of Huntington on the north shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, New York. It is home to about 3,600 residents as well as historical sites and landmarks that date back more than 100 years.
A Brief History of Lloyd Harbor
Caumsett ("place by sharp rock") was the name given to the region by the Matinecock Native Americans in 1654. Caumsett State Park houses a house that was built in 1676 by James Lloyd, which was then inherited by his son Henry. The British built several fortifications in the neck during the Revolutionary War, including Fort Franklin, after his son Joseph Lloyd died in 1763. A steamboat from New York City came to the estate in the 1880s, bringing tourists and wealthy New Yorkers with it. In 1841, Henry Lloyd IV was the last Lloyd to own the estate.
Village Incorporation
In 1926, the Village was incorporated, and the tax rolls listed 62 owners of 80 parcels. The tax rolls had only seven of the 80 parcels at less than three acres each. Two West Neck residents, Albert Milbank and Colonel Timothy S. Williams, spearheaded the campaign to incorporate. The residents were motivated by a desire to control future development and the area surrounding the Village. They sought to do this by adopting a zoning plan to protect the rural atmosphere and prevent urban encroachment.
Our Town
The 9.2 square miles of Lloyd Harbor Village is second in New York, with a sparsely populated population of approximately 3,600. The Village is home to Lloyd Neck and the northern part of the West Neck Peninsula. It has colonial manors, Gold Coast estates, a small rural residential community, and a suburb.
The Schools in Lloyd Harbor
Our school district takes pride in communicating with its residents. And to that end, each school has an active parent association and a weekly or monthly publication detailing what's going on at your child's specific grade level. For example, Goosehill Primary School - Kindergarten and First Grades: Lloyd Harbor Elementary School - Second through Sixth Grades: Cold Spring Harbor Junior and Senior High School – Seventh through Twelfth Grades. The Cold Spring Harbor High School is the home of our seventh through twelfth grades, on Turkey Lane in Cold Spring Harbor.
